Synopsis

Haunted by a recent suicide attempt and grappling with profound grief, the upper-class Margaret Prior volunteers at Millbank Prison, Victorian London’s most infamous women’s correctional facility, as part of her rehabilitative charity work. Amidst the grim realities and hardened criminals, Margaret finds herself inexplicably drawn to Selina Dawes, a young spiritualist imprisoned after a séance she conducted led to a tragic death and profound disturbance in another woman. Initially skeptical of Selina’s alleged supernatural abilities, Margaret becomes increasingly entangled in her captivating world of spectral encounters, psychic phenomena, and forbidden desires. As their bond deepens, Margaret's fascination with Selina transforms into an obsessive love, compelling her to question her own sanity, societal norms, and the very nature of truth. Driven by a desperate need to free Selina, and in doing so, perhaps herself, Margaret plots a daring escape, unknowingly stepping into a web of deceit, spiritualism, and profound personal sacrifice. Sarah Waters masterfully weaves a chilling gothic tale of love, obsession, and the unsettling allure of the unknown.
