Synopsis

In the atmospheric and mist-shrouded fishing village of Rackmoor, perched precariously on the Yorkshire coast, the festive cheer of Twelfth Night is shattered by a brutal murder. The victim, the enigmatic and much-disliked vicar, is found dead, leaving behind a community rife with suspicion and deeply held secrets. Scotland Yard’s Superintendent Richard Jury, accompanied by his aristocratic confidant Melrose Plant, is drawn into the chilling investigation. As Jury delves into the lives of Rackmoor's eccentric inhabitants, he uncovers a tangled web of old feuds, forbidden passions, and hidden motives. The picturesque setting belies a darkness that has festered for years, and every villager seems to harbor a piece of a puzzle that grows more complex with each revelation. Grimes masterfully weaves a tale of intricate plotting and vivid characterization, where nothing is quite as it seems, and the truth remains stubbornly elusive amidst the rugged beauty of the English coast.
