Peony in Love

Set in 17th-century China, "Peony in Love" tells the poignant story of Peony, a sheltered sixteen-year-old girl from a wealthy family, whose life is rigidly dictated by Confucian traditions. Her deepest desire is to experience the profound love depicted in "The Peony Pavilion," a forbidden opera. On the eve of her own arranged marriage, Peony falls passionately in love with a young scholar. However, her dreams are shattered by a sudden, tragic illness, forcing her into an early death. The narrative then takes a unique turn as Peony's ghost remains on Earth, a 'hungry ghost' tethered to her former life. She observes her bereaved husband, the woman who becomes his next wife, and the enduring ripple effects of her family's choices. Through her spectral existence, Peony grapples with jealousy, longing, and the quest for her story to be acknowledged and her voice heard, ultimately finding a way to transcend societal constraints even in death, offering a compelling look at the inner lives of women in historical China.
