Synopsis

In the vibrant, volatile city of Agdel Lex, built atop the ruins of Alikand, ancient magic collides with modern corporate intrigue. This is the stage for Max Gladstone's 'Ruin of Angels,' where streets shift like memories and dead gods litter the desert. Priestess/investment banker Kai Pohala arrives to conquer the city's burgeoning 'nightmare startup' scene and reconnect with her estranged sister, Lei. However, Kai quickly discovers Lei embroiled in a collapsing, shadowy business deal that soon turns deadly. When Lei is implicated in a crime she undeniably committed, she flees, forcing Kai into a desperate race against the authoritarian Iskari Rectification Authority. As Kai navigates the city's labyrinthine alleys, filled with treasure seekers, combat librarians, and dispossessed knights, she uncovers Lei's audacious plan: a daring heist into the god-haunted wastes, fueled by a desire for freedom for an occupied city and the belief that Alikand's spirit might not be entirely extinguished. This gripping tale of sisterly bonds, corporate espionage, and divine power explores the cost of progress and the enduring fight for liberation.

Critical Reception

"Praised as a 'Hugo-nominated' installment in the acclaimed Craft Sequence, 'Ruin of Angels' is lauded as the 'best kind of urban fantasy'—sharp, original, and passionately told."
