Synopsis

In Mark Billingham's gripping standalone thriller, "Time of Death," Detective Inspector Tom Thorne finds his romantic getaway with girlfriend Helen Weeks abruptly cut short when a heinous crime strikes Helen’s hometown. Two young girls, Chloe and Sophie, have vanished, and the local police believe they have their culprit: a known pedophile already in custody. However, Helen, a former DCI now working as a psychologist, senses something deeply wrong with the rapid conclusion and the man’s insistent proclamations of innocence. Thorne, initially reluctant to involve himself in another force's investigation, is drawn into the unsettling case by Helen's conviction and his own mounting suspicions. As they delve deeper, Thorne and Helen uncover a web of secrets, small-town prejudices, and a chilling possibility: that the real abductor is still out there, and time is rapidly running out for the missing girls. The novel masterfully explores themes of justice, doubt, and the fallibility of initial judgments, all while ratcheting up unbearable tension.

Critical Reception

"Mark Billingham solidifies his status as a master of the modern British crime thriller, delivering a taut and emotionally resonant narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats."
