Tess of the d'Urbervilles

Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of a declining rural Wessex, Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" introduces Tess Durbeyfield, a spirited young milkmaid whose life takes a tragic turn when her impoverished family discovers they are descended from the ancient d'Urberville lineage. Sent to claim kinship with a wealthy branch of the family, Tess encounters the dissolute Alec d'Urberville, who seduces and ruins her. She attempts to rebuild her life, falling deeply in love with the intellectual Angel Clare, to whom she confesses her past on their wedding night. Angel's unforgiving nature and societal hypocrisy lead to their separation and Tess's further descent into despair. Torn between her two lovers and societal judgment, Tess finds herself trapped in a cycle of suffering that culminates in a desperate act, cementing her status as one of literature's most poignant and tragic heroines.
