Synopsis

Jude Fawley, a working-class orphan in rural Wessex, dreams of pursuing an academic career at Christminster University, symbolising Oxford. However, his aspirations are continually thwarted by his humble origins and a series of ill-fated personal choices. After a hasty and unhappy marriage to the earthy Arabella Donn, Jude falls deeply in love with his intellectual and unconventional cousin, Sue Bridehead. Their profound connection leads them to reject Victorian societal norms, particularly the institution of marriage, choosing to live together in an attempt to forge a life free from conventional constraints. This defiance, coupled with relentless societal condemnation and a devastating succession of tragedies, systematically crushes their spirits and destroys their dreams. Hardy's final novel is a powerful and bleak indictment of class prejudice, educational exclusivity, and the rigid, often hypocritical, moral strictures of late Victorian society.

Critical Reception

"A profoundly controversial yet celebrated masterpiece, "Jude the Obscure" scandalised late Victorian society with its unflinching critique of marriage and social hypocrisy, effectively ending Thomas Hardy's career as a novelist."
