Synopsis

In a near-future England ravaged by environmental collapse and economic crisis, the authoritarian regime, 'The Authority,' has centralized its citizens and subjected women of child-bearing age to forced contraception. Against this backdrop of oppression, a woman known only as 'Sister' makes a radical choice. Fleeing a stifling marriage, she journeys to the remote, untamed Cumbrian fells to join a clandestine community of women at Carhullan. This isolated commune, led by the charismatic and formidable Jackie, is a haven and a training ground for rebellion, committed to a fierce, independent vision of freedom. Sister seeks to become a rebel fighter, drawn by the promise of a life unbound by the Authority's control. However, as she immerses herself in their harsh, disciplined existence and confronts the brutal realities of their fight, she is forced to question the true meaning of freedom, sacrifice, and the lengths one must go to defend it.

Critical Reception

"Praised as a visionary and brutally fresh work, 'The Carhullan Army' stands at the vanguard of modern dystopian literature, fiercely captivating readers with its provocative themes and vivid Cumbrian setting."
