Synopsis

“The Moving Finger” plunges readers into the seemingly idyllic English village of Lymstock, which is soon revealed to be festering with malice. Jerry Burton, recovering from a flying accident, arrives with his sister Joanna, seeking peace. Their respite is shattered when they receive a venomous anonymous letter accusing them of scandalous behaviour. They quickly discover these “poison pen” letters are terrorizing the entire community, sowing distrust and suspicion. The situation escalates dramatically when Mrs. Symmington, the wife of a respected solicitor, dies by apparent suicide, leaving behind a note and one such hateful letter. However, the circumstances raise questions, leading to a police investigation that eventually suggests murder. The local authorities are baffled by the intricate web of petty jealousies and hidden resentments. It is only with the arrival of the astute Miss Marple, called in by a concerned governess, that the true nature of the evil at play begins to unravel. With her profound insight into human nature and her unparalleled ability to decipher the subtle cues of village life, Miss Marple meticulously pieces together the clues, exposing the identity of the cunning and ruthless murderer who uses the anonymous letters as a smokescreen for a far more sinister plot.
