Synopsis

During a seemingly mundane train journey, Mrs. Elspeth McGillicuddy witnesses a chilling murder in a passing train. A man strangles a woman to death, and the body slumps, before the two trains diverge. Despite her vivid account, the police dismiss her story, unable to find any evidence of a crime or a body. Undeterred and certain of what she saw, Mrs. McGillicuddy turns to her old friend, the shrewd and insightful Miss Jane Marple. Convinced that Elspeth is telling the truth, Miss Marple begins her own investigation, which leads her to Rutherford Hall, an eccentric country estate where the late millionaire Mr. Crackenthorpe's family harbors secrets, resentments, and potential motives. As Miss Marple's young, energetic protégé, Lucy Eyelesbarrow, infiltrates the household as a housemaid, she uncovers a tangled web of deceit, hidden identities, and a surprising number of possible victims and suspects. The search for the elusive body and the identity of the murderer becomes a race against time, revealing the dark undercurrents beneath a seemingly respectable family.
