Synopsis

Italo Calvino's 'The Cloven Viscount' unfurls a darkly imaginative 17th-century fable where the absurdities of human nature are dissected with satirical precision. During a battle against the Turks, the inexperienced Viscount Medardo of Terralba is brutally bisected by a cannonball. Miraculously, both halves survive and return to his feudal estate. The 'Bad Medardo' embodies pure malevolence, reveling in cruelty and oppression, inflicting terror upon his subjects. Soon after, his 'Good Medardo' counterpart also reappears, embodying an equally extreme, almost unsettling, saintly virtue. As these two starkly opposed halves—one representing absolute evil, the other absolute good—vie for control of the land and the affection of the same woman, Pamela, Calvino masterfully explores themes of duality, morality, and the inherent contradictions within human identity. This macabre and brilliant novella challenges simplistic notions of good and evil, painting a vivid picture of a world fractured by extreme absolutes.

Critical Reception

"A seminal work of allegorical fantasy, 'The Cloven Viscount' is lauded for its profound exploration of human duality and moral extremism, cementing Calvino's legacy as a masterful fabulist and philosophical satirist."
