In a financially challenging post-recession Los Angeles, defense attorney Mickey Haller finds his once-thriving criminal practice dwindling. To keep his business afloat, he ventures into the contentious world of foreclosure defense, a move that soon plunges him into a high-stakes murder trial. His client, Lisa Trammel, stands accused of killing Mitch Anderson, the very banker she blames for attempting to seize her home. As Haller assembles his team to defend Trammel, he's plagued by unsettling doubts about her innocence, even as the evidence against her mounts. The case takes a darker turn when Haller uncovers Anderson’s own illicit dealings in the black market. Soon after, Haller himself becomes a target, brutally assaulted, confirming his suspicion that he's stumbled onto something far more complex and dangerous than a simple foreclosure dispute. With his own life now threatened, Haller must navigate a labyrinth of deceit, legal maneuvering, and personal peril to uncover the truth, even if it means exposing uncomfortable realities about his own client.
