Synopsis

Amidst the brutal civil war of 1139, often called 'The Anarchy,' Worcester becomes a crucible of conflict, forcing countless refugees to flee north. Among them are Eluned, a beautiful 18-year-old, and her younger brother, both orphaned by the turmoil. Accompanied by a young nun, Sister Hilaria, they set out on a perilous journey towards the relative safety of Shrewsbury Abbey. However, their hopes for sanctuary are dashed as they vanish without a trace in the treacherous, snow-bound wilderness of Shropshire. News of their disappearance reaches Brother Cadfael, the herbalist monk of Shrewsbury, who feels a profound obligation to uncover their fate. Venturing into the unforgiving winter landscape, Cadfael must navigate through a world gripped by war, suspicion, and the chilling grip of nature itself. His quest to find the missing travelers plunges him into a web of secrets, betrayals, and unforeseen dangers, testing his intellect and resolve against a backdrop of feudal strife and ancient enmities. This compelling installment sees Cadfael race against time and the elements to solve a mystery shrouded in ice and fear.
