Synopsis

"The Bane of the Black Sword" plunges the tormented albino emperor, Elric of Melniboné, deeper into his accursed destiny. Haunted by past betrayals, Elric finally unearths the hidden lair of the insidious sorcerer who previously caused him great inconvenience. What begins as a desperate search for vengeance soon spirals into a tumultuous reunion of scattered allies and old adversaries. When a formidable demon, sent with the sole purpose of devouring Elric's soul, is thwarted, its master ensures Elric's capture, furthering the intricate web of deceit. Through a cunning bargain struck with an unlikely, well-intentioned merchant, Elric secures his freedom, though at a profound personal cost that leaves him irrevocably altered. Restored to his full, formidable power by his symbiotic, soul-devouring blade, Stormbringer, Elric invokes unholy aid to confront and utterly vanquish his meddlesome sorceress enemy in a final, cataclysmic assault. This confrontation culminates in a grievous, dragon-fueled death, leaving the ancient dragon caves without their tyrannical master. Yet, true to his tragic existence, Elric's victory is hollow. A broken promise and an unwanted soul, claimed by Stormbringer's insatiable hunger, serve as a stark reminder of the unbearable cost of his power and the discomforting nature of his triumphs.

Critical Reception

"A cornerstone of the Sword and Sorcery genre, this volume deepens Elric's tragic legend, solidifying Moorcock's status as a master of dark, philosophical fantasy."
