Synopsis

Sally Milz, a seasoned sketch writer for the late-night comedy show 'The Night Owls,' has long accepted a life without grand romance, focusing on her career and friendships after past heartbreaks. However, her cynical view on love is challenged when her average-looking male colleague, Danny Horst, starts dating a glamorous actress. This phenomenon of successful, beautiful women falling for less conventionally attractive men in creative industries prompts Sally to write a satirical sketch called 'The Danny Horst Rule,' highlighting the perceived imbalance where the reverse rarely happens for women. Her carefully constructed worldview is upended by the arrival of Noah Brewster, a charismatic pop music sensation set to host and perform on the show. Despite her skepticism, Sally finds herself undeniably drawn to Noah. As they collaborate on sketches, undeniable sparks fly, leaving Sally to ponder whether a fairytale romance, usually reserved for fiction, could possibly unfold in her 'real' life. Curtis Sittenfeld expertly explores the complexities of modern relationships, gender dynamics, and the allure of celebrity, asking if love can truly transcend societal expectations.
