Synopsis

Born into a radical survivalist family in the remote mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover’s childhood was devoid of formal education, medical care, and conventional societal norms. Her isolation meant she never set foot in a classroom until the age of seventeen, taught only a warped version of history and science by her fundamentalist father and a home-schooled mother. As she grew, the family’s extreme views and the escalating violence from one of her brothers created an untenable reality. Driven by an insatiable hunger for knowledge, Tara bravely broke away from her family's insular world. She embarked on an extraordinary journey of self-invention, first teaching herself enough to gain admission to Brigham Young University, and later earning a PhD from Cambridge University. "Educated" is a poignant and powerful memoir exploring the universal questions of family loyalty, the transformative power of education, and the painful sacrifices required to forge one's own path, even if it means leaving behind all that you’ve ever known.

Critical Reception

"Recipient of numerous accolades, including #1 New York Times Bestseller and a selection for President Obama's and Bill Gates's reading lists, "Educated" is widely celebrated as one of the most impactful memoirs of the 21st century."
