Tara Westover is an American memoirist, born in 1986 in Clifton, Idaho. She is best known for her critically acclaimed memoir, "Educated" (2018). Raised in a survivalist Mormon family that was deeply distrustful of mainstream institutions, she did not attend school until the age of 17. Despite her lack of formal education, she taught herself enough to gain admission to Brigham Young University. Her intellectual journey led her to further studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, where she earned a Master's degree, and later a PhD in history from the University of Cambridge. Her work explores themes of self-invention, the transformative power of education, and the complex interplay between family loyalty and personal truth.
«You can love someone and still choose to say goodbye to them. You can miss a person every day, and still be glad that they're no longer in your life.»
«My life was narrated for me by others. Their voices were strong, emphatic, absolute. It had never occurred to me that my voice might be as strong as theirs.»
«The one thing I have learned is that you can be a good person, a moral person, a person of integrity, and still be wrong.»
Westover's writing style is characterized by its evocative and lyrical prose, offering a deeply introspective and unflinching account of her challenging upbringing. She skillfully blends personal narrative with profound philosophical and psychological insights, making complex emotional landscapes accessible to her readers. Her storytelling is vivid and immersive, drawing readers into her journey of self-discovery and intellectual awakening.
