Synopsis

In a world unlike any other, two distinct cities, Beszel and Ul Qoma, occupy the exact same geographical space, their citizens living side-by-side yet separated by an unyielding psychological and societal divide. Residents are rigorously trained from birth to 'unsee' the other city, its inhabitants, and its architecture, an unspoken rule maintained by the mysterious, omnipresent authority known as Breach. When the body of a young woman is discovered in Beszel, Inspector Tyador Borlú of the Extreme Crime Squad is tasked with a seemingly straightforward murder investigation. However, the evidence soon points towards the unthinkable: a connection to Ul Qoma. As Borlú is compelled to transgress the invisible, yet impenetrable, borders between the cities, he risks invoking Breach and confronting the profound philosophical implications of his reality. China Miéville crafts a gripping police procedural that transcends genre, delving into themes of perception, identity, nationalism, and the very fabric of urban existence.
