In 1970s Milan, the philosophical student Casaubon, engrossed in a thesis on the enigmatic Templar Knights, finds himself drawn into a labyrinthine conspiracy. At the bohemian Pilades Bar, he crosses paths with Jacopo Belbo, a cynical editor at Garamond Press, and their colleague Diotallevi. Their lives take an unexpected turn when they encounter Colonel Ardenti, an eccentric author convinced that the Templars have been orchestrating a grand, seven-century-long scheme of revenge. Ardenti's subsequent mysterious disappearance sparks the trio's morbid curiosity. Using their profound knowledge of history, occultism, and semiotics, they playfully construct 'The Plan' – an elaborate, fictional conspiracy theory for the Templars, weaving together historical facts, esoteric lore, and their own imaginative embellishments. However, their intellectual game spirals into a terrifying reality as they discover, too late, that the intricate fiction they invented might just be true, placing them at the heart of an ancient and deadly secret society.
Critical Reception
"Often hailed as a postmodern masterpiece, 'Foucault's Pendulum' is celebrated for its intellectual density, intricate plotting, and masterful manipulation of history, semiotics, and conspiracy theories, solidifying Umberto Eco's status as a literary giant."
