Synopsis

In Charles Todd's "Search the Dark," the brilliant yet haunted Inspector Ian Rutledge, still grappling with the psychological scars of World War I and the spectral presence of Hamish, finds himself embroiled in a chilling case in the seemingly idyllic Dorset village of Singleton Magna. The discovery of a murdered woman and the disappearance of two young children plunge Rutledge into a community rife with secrets. Initially, suspicion falls upon a shell-shocked veteran whose family perished in a wartime bombing, but Rutledge's acute instincts tell him otherwise. As he delves deeper, unearthing hidden motives and unraveling complex relationships among villagers and London's elite, he encounters resistance from those determined to protect their privileged positions and private passions. The case takes a darker turn with the discovery of another body, intensifying Rutledge's quest for truth. He must navigate a labyrinth of deceit, class divides, and deeply buried pasts to find the real killer and the missing children before it's too late, all while battling his own internal demons.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its profound character study and atmospheric tension, "Search the Dark" further solidified the Inspector Rutledge series as a benchmark in historical mystery fiction."
