Synopsis

In the vibrant, tumultuous heart of 1960s Harlem, a charismatic con artist named Deke O’Hara emerges from prison, ready to orchestrate his most audacious scam yet: the 'Back-to-Africa' movement. Promising a return to the ancestral homeland, he stages a grand rally, aiming to collect a hefty sum from his hopeful followers. However, the plan goes awry when white gunmen hijack the collection, making off with a colossal bale of cotton that mysteriously contains the stolen cash. This sudden disappearance ignites a frantic search, drawing in the indomitable NYPD detectives, "Coffin Ed" Johnson and "Grave Digger" Jones. As Harlem descends into a chaotic hunt for the elusive cotton bale, the two street-smart officers navigate a labyrinth of hustlers, dreamers, and desperate characters, unraveling a complex web of deceit, violence, and dark humor that only Chester Himes can deliver.
