Synopsis

In the chaotic underbelly of 1950s Harlem, Chester Himes's 'The Heat's On' plunges readers into a labyrinthine mystery that threatens to unravel the careers of the iconic detective duo, Coffin Ed Johnson and Grave Digger Jones. Their latest case spirals dangerously out of control when a simple task—tracking two criminals—goes horribly wrong. Pinky, a colossal albino, has vanished into the vibrant Harlem streets, a needle in a haystack of his own distinct making. More critically, Jake, a drug dealer, meets an untimely end after a brutal encounter with Grave Digger, placing both detectives squarely in the crosshairs of internal affairs. To clear their names and salvage their badges, Coffin Ed and Grave Digger must untangle a grotesque web of mayhem that includes a murdered African man with a slit throat and a gargantuan dog with a shattered skull. Himes masterfully crafts a narrative brimming with visceral tension, macabre twists, and the barely contained chaos that defines his hardboiled Harlem tales, exposing the raw, brutal heart of a city on the brink.

Critical Reception

"Often hailed as 'the greatest find in American crime fiction since Raymond Chandler,' Chester Himes's work, including 'The Heat's On,' stands as a towering achievement in the noir genre."
