Synopsis

Jennifer Egan, the acclaimed author of "A Visit from the Goon Squad," plunges readers into a labyrinthine world of psychological suspense and lingering trauma in "The Keep." The narrative centers on two estranged cousins, Danny and Howard, whose lives were irrevocably scarred by a childhood prank. Two decades later, they are drawn back together under strange circumstances, tasked with renovating a dilapidated medieval castle in a remote, unsettling corner of Eastern Europe. As paranoia mounts and isolation deepens within the ancient stone walls, the men find themselves inexorably drawn to re-enact the very event that defined their youth, leading to far more catastrophic and horrifying consequences. Intertwined with their disturbing tale is the confession of a nameless prisoner, held in isolation for an unspecified crime. His captivating, unsettling account gradually unfolds, offering a piercing commentary that seamlessly bridges the crimes and psychological wounds of both past and present, challenging perceptions of reality, memory, and survival.

Critical Reception
