Synopsis

Fresh from a psychiatric hospital, journalist Camille Preaker is dispatched to her insular, oppressive hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri, to report on the brutal murders of two preteen girls. Her return forces her to confront the deeply unsettling dynamics of her estranged family: her aristocratic and psychologically manipulative mother, Adora, and her enigmatic, unnervingly precocious thirteen-year-old half-sister, Amma, who exerts a strange sway over the town's youth. As Camille delves into the dark undercurrents of the community and the increasingly disturbing details of the crimes, she finds herself reliving her own traumatic past, including the death of her sister Marian and her struggles with self-harm. The investigation blurs the lines between reporter and participant, compelling Camille to unravel the tangled, psychological puzzle of her own history and her family's dark secrets, pushing her to the brink in a homecoming that could prove fatal.

Critical Reception
