Synopsis

Three decades after their scandalous magical escapades with the devilish Darryl Van Horne, the three notorious Eastwick divorcées—Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie—find themselves widows, scattered across the globe and grappling with solitude. Prompted by a nostalgic urge and a desire for renewed connection, Sukie and Jane convince Alexandra to return to their former Rhode Island haunt. Eastwick, once a crucible of their awakened desires and wicked mischief, still holds a mystical allure, even without the presence of Van Horne or their bygone lovers. However, their return isn't merely a trip down memory lane. The familiar streets and scenery stir not only fond recollections of their vibrant youth but also awaken lingering resentments among the townspeople who remember their unholy pact. As they confront the echoes of their past misdeeds, the shocks of a mysterious counterspell, and the inexorable march of old age, Updike masterfully explores themes of memory, regret, and the enduring power of both friendship and enchantment in this evocative sequel.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its elegant prose and insightful exploration of aging, memory, and supernatural undercurrents, 'The Widows of Eastwick' serves as a thoughtful and often unsettling continuation of John Updike's celebrated original."
