Synopsis

Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, a former high school basketball star, finds himself profoundly discontented with his ordinary life in his mid-twenties. Stuck in a monotonous job selling kitchen gadgets and a stagnating marriage to his pregnant, alcoholic wife, Janice, Rabbit is seized by an impulsive desire to escape. Driven by an undefined yearning to recapture the fleeting glory of his youth, he abandons his family and embarks on a bewildered flight from responsibility. His desperate search for meaning and happiness leads him into a series of aimless encounters, including an affair with the free-spirited Ruth. As he navigates this turbulent period of self-discovery and denial, Rabbit's actions create a ripple effect of profound and often tragic consequences for everyone around him, particularly his abandoned family. Updike masterfully explores themes of suburban ennui, the burden of unfulfilled potential, and the complexities of human desire, painting a poignant portrait of a man perpetually running from himself.
