Synopsis

In the impoverished fishing village of Thul, near Bombay, thirteen-year-old Lila and her twelve-year-old brother Hari bear the heavy burden of their family's survival. With their mother gravely ill and their father often incapacitated by drink, the children are forced to mature rapidly, caring for their two younger sisters amidst dire circumstances. Hari, unable to tolerate the family's despair and the father's inaction, takes the courageous step of leaving for the bustling city of Bombay in search of work and a better future. Back in Thul, Lila shoulders the immense responsibility of managing the household and tending to her ailing mother, demonstrating remarkable resilience and selflessness. Anita Desai's poignant narrative vividly portrays the harsh realities of rural poverty in India, yet it simultaneously illuminates the enduring strength of familial bonds and the indomitable spirit of its young protagonists. It's a powerful and deeply moving exploration of hope, sacrifice, and the relentless human will to survive against all odds.
