Synopsis

In 18th-century colonial Cartagena, Sierva María de Todos los Ángeles, the privileged yet untamed twelve-year-old daughter of a marquis, is bitten by a rabid dog. Superstition and fear quickly lead her family and society to believe she is possessed by demons. Consequently, she is confined to a convent, destined for exorcism. There, Father Cayetano Delaura, a young, learned priest, is tasked with her spiritual liberation. Initially skeptical, Delaura becomes increasingly drawn to Sierva María's enigmatic presence, fierce spirit, and rumored affliction. Their relationship, forbidden by religious vows and societal norms, blossoms into an intense, passionate love affair that challenges the boundaries of faith, reason, and morality. As the perceived demonic possession intensifies and Delaura's obsession grows, they navigate a world steeped in religious dogma, colonial prejudices, and the clash of indigenous beliefs with European Catholicism, ultimately leading to a poignant and tragic unraveling. Márquez weaves a haunting tale exploring themes of forbidden love, madness, and the human spirit's resilience against overwhelming societal and spiritual forces.
