Synopsis

In 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman arrives in Amsterdam, a city of opulent wealth and severe religious strictures, to marry the illustrious merchant Johannes Brandt. Her new life, however, is far from welcoming. Johannes is kind but distant, leaving Nella largely alone with his sharp-tongued sister, Marin. Her world takes an intriguing turn when Johannes gifts her a cabinet-sized replica of their home, for which she commissions an enigmatic miniaturist. The tiny, lifelike creations sent by the elusive artist begin to eerily predict and reflect the secrets of the Brandt household, from illicit loves to hidden identities. As Nella delves deeper, she uncovers the family's unusual truths and the escalating dangers they face in a society where deviation from moral norms is met with severe consequences. The miniaturist's uncanny foresight forces Nella to question if this mysterious artist is a guide to salvation or an architect of their doom, as the Brandt family's meticulously constructed facade crumbles under the weight of scandal and forbidden desires.
