Synopsis

“The Family Fang” introduces readers to Caleb and Camille Fang, avant-garde performance artists whose entire lives—and the childhoods of their children, Annie and Buster—have been a meticulously staged, often chaotic, art project. Having spent their adult lives trying to escape the shadow of their eccentric parents and their bizarre upbringing, Annie, a struggling actress, and Buster, a floundering writer, find themselves drawn back to the family home after a series of personal and professional misfortunes. Reunited under one roof for the first time in years, the “Child A” and “Child B” of the Fangs' artistic legacy are forced to confront not only their parents' latest, most ambitious, and potentially dangerous performance piece, but also the enduring, bewildering impact of their unconventional past on their present identities. As the line between art and reality blurs within the Fang household, Annie and Buster must navigate their complex relationships, question the nature of creativity, and ultimately decide whether they can ever truly break free from their masterpiece of dysfunction, or if they are destined to become part of it once more. This poignant and darkly comedic novel is a brilliant exploration of family, identity, and the sacrifices made in the name of art.
