Synopsis

In Lois Lowry's 'Messenger,' readers return to the nuanced world first introduced in 'The Giver' and 'Gathering Blue,' through the eyes of Matty. Now living in Village, a haven for outcasts and a place of burgeoning gifts, Matty serves as the community's trusted messenger, navigating the treacherous Forest that surrounds their settlement. Village, once a welcoming sanctuary, begins to subtly shift, becoming less hospitable and more secretive, as its inhabitants develop a desire to close themselves off from the outside world. When the benevolent leader, Jonas (from 'The Giver'), senses the encroaching corruption and the Forest's growing malevolence, he tasks Matty with a perilous journey: to retrieve Kira (from 'Gathering Blue') from her previous community before Village's borders close permanently. As Matty ventures into the increasingly hostile Forest, he must confront its deadly traps and discover the true nature of his own emerging gift, a power that holds the key to healing, not just himself, but potentially the very soul of his fracturing world.

Critical Reception

"As the poignant third installment in The Giver Quartet, 'Messenger' continues to resonate for its thoughtful exploration of community, corruption, and the enduring power of empathy within a dystopian framework."
