Biography
Ha Jin, born Jin Xuefei in Liaoning, China, in 1956, is a renowned Chinese American author celebrated for his poignant portrayal of life under political oppression and the complexities of the immigrant experience. He served five years in the People's Liberation Army before pursuing higher education at Heilongjiang University and Shandong University. In 1985, he moved to the United States for graduate studies at Brandeis University. The tragic events of the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 profoundly impacted him, leading to his decision to remain in the U.S. and write exclusively in English, a choice he felt offered artistic freedom from the political scrutiny he might face writing in Chinese. His works, including the National Book Award-winning novel 'Waiting' and the PEN/Faulkner Award-winning 'War Trash,' meticulously explore themes of exile, identity, love, loyalty, and the human search for dignity amidst challenging circumstances. His writing is characterized by its realism, understatement, and deep psychological insight into his characters. He has held teaching positions at Emory University and Boston University, influencing new generations of writers.
