Synopsis

Set against the sun-drenched French Riviera, "Bonjour Tristesse" plunges into the complex world of Cécile, a precocious and self-absorbed seventeen-year-old. Released from the constraints of boarding school, she revels in an idyllic, hedonistic summer with her charming, bohemian, and perpetually single father, Raymond. Their carefree existence is marked by a casual disregard for convention and a string of temporary lovers for Raymond, which Cécile observes with an almost detached amusement, engaging in her own nascent romantic dalliances. However, their blissful, amoral bubble is shattered by the arrival of Anne Larsen, a sophisticated, intelligent, and morally upright friend of Cécile's deceased mother. Anne's influence promises stability and respectability, threatening Cécile's cherished, uninhibited life with her father. Feeling her freedom and their unique bond jeopardized, Cécile orchestrates a manipulative scheme to drive Anne away, a plan that spirals tragically out of control, forcing her to confront the devastating consequences of her actions and the indelible mark left by her summer of 'hello sadness'.
