A Short, Sharp Shock

Synopsis

A man awakens on a moonlit beach, half-drowned and with no memory of his past, nor how he arrived in this surreal, watery world. The only clue to his identity is the vague, unshakable impression of a woman who washed ashore with him but has since vanished. He soon discovers himself in a landscape of savage beauty, encircled by a thin spine of land, inhabited by strange tribesmen. Aided by these mysterious allies, he embarks on a perilous journey to the cove of the Spine Kings, a brutal race who have enslaved the missing woman and others. This quest for her becomes an urgent search for his own forgotten identity, as he navigates a wondrous yet cruel land. Haunting and lyrical, 'A Short, Sharp Shock' is a profound exploration of memory, love, and self-discovery within a vividly imagined, perilous world, showcasing Kim Stanley Robinson's unparalleled talent for creating breathtaking vistas and compelling narratives.
