Synopsis

Agnes and Tobias, an affluent, aging couple, lead a seemingly comfortable but emotionally sterile existence in their suburban home. Their fragile equilibrium is disrupted by the permanent presence of Agnes's sharp-tongued, alcoholic sister, Claire, and the unexpected return of their thrice-divorced, adult daughter, Julia, seeking refuge from a failed marriage. The true catalyst for chaos, however, arrives in the form of their best friends, Harry and Edna, who appear on their doorstep, consumed by an inexplicable terror and seeking to escape their own home. This invasion forces Agnes and Tobias to confront the precarious nature of friendship, family bonds, and the true meaning of home and belonging. Albee masterfully explores themes of existential dread, marital decay, the fear of solitude, and the complex, often unspoken, dynamics that underpin human relationships, all while questioning the boundaries of love and obligation.
