Synopsis

In the vibrant yet brutal world of 19th-century Paris, the desperate and impoverished young nobleman Raphaël de Valentin stumbles upon a mysterious antique shop. There, he is offered a magical piece of shagreen, a wild ass's skin, which possesses the power to grant his every wish. However, this potent gift comes with a terrible curse: with each desire fulfilled, the skin shrinks, and simultaneously, Raphaël's own life force diminishes. Consumed by ambition and a longing for love, wealth, and recognition, Raphaël embarks on a hedonistic spree, watching in horror as the skin, and his own existence, rapidly waste away. Balzac masterfully weaves a tale that is both a biting critique of societal values and a profound exploration of human desire, the cost of ambition, and the inexorable march towards mortality. It brilliantly merges supernatural fantasy with a vivid, realistic depiction of Parisian life, forcing Raphaël, and the reader, to confront the ultimate price of unchecked desires.
