Synopsis

In Dorothy L. Sayers's compelling 1926 mystery, "Clouds of Witness," Lord Peter Wimsey finds himself embroiled in his most personal and perilous case yet. His elder brother, Gerald, the Duke of Denver, stands accused of murdering the disreputable Denis Cathcart, who was soon to be his sister Mary's fiancé. Cathcart, a known card cheat, was found dead on the Duke's estate, and Gerald's furious confrontation with the victim moments before his death, coupled with a complete lack of alibi—which he stubbornly refuses to provide—paints a damning picture. As the Duke faces an unprecedented trial before his peers in the House of Lords, Lord Peter must race against time to unearth the truth and clear his brother's name. His investigation leads him from the stately homes of England to a daring transatlantic flight to America, years before such a feat was common, all in pursuit of a vital piece of evidence. This intricate tale explores themes of family loyalty, honor, and the rigid societal expectations of the British aristocracy.
