Synopsis

In Chris Carter's electrifying twelfth installment of the Robert Hunter series, Detective Robert Hunter is thrust into his most perplexing and terrifying case yet. A series of seemingly unconnected murders plague Los Angeles, each victim bearing a sinister, cryptic message that baffles forensic teams. Hunter is called to a gruesome crime scene, only to discover a disturbing verse of poetry meticulously placed within the victim's body during the autopsy. Soon after, another body is found, displaying a starkly different modus operandi but an equally chilling degree of violence, leading Hunter to suspect a single, highly disturbed perpetrator. The discovery of the second part of the poem confirms his fears: a meticulous, systematic serial killer is at large, escalating his reign of terror. With a severe lack of conventional forensic evidence, Hunter and his partner Carlos Garcia must navigate a labyrinth of psychological warfare against an adversary who revels in the fear of his victims, viewing death not as an end, but as a chilling lesson to be imparted. As the body count rises, Hunter grapples with the unsettling possibility that he has finally met his intellectual and psychological equal.
