Thirteen-year-old Jojo is forced to confront the harsh realities of adulthood far too soon. With his father incarcerated and his mother, Leonie, battling drug addiction, Jojo shoulders the responsibility of caring for his infant sister, Kayla. His already burdened life is further complicated by the spectral presence of his uncle, Given, a victim of racial violence whose restless spirit seeks resolution. As Given's persistent haunting intensifies, Jojo feels compelled to help his spectral uncle find peace. However, their quest for peace is abruptly interrupted when Leonie uproots Jojo and Kayla for a perilous road trip across Mississippi to pick up their father from Parchman Prison. The journey itself becomes a brutal testament to their mother's addiction, leaving the children to endure hunger while she prioritizes her cravings. Through a landscape imbued with history, prejudice, and the supernatural, Jojo grapples with the living and the dead, seeking to protect his sister and understand the meaning of home and family in a world that offers little comfort.
