In the pre-dawn hours of a sluggish Midwest city, hundreds are queued at a job fair when a driver in a stolen Mercedes intentionally plows into the crowd, mercilessly running over victims, backing up, and striking again. Eight are killed and fifteen injured before the killer escapes. Months later, retired detective Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved case. Then, a chilling letter arrives from someone claiming to be the 'Mercedes Killer,' threatening an even more devastating attack. Haunted by the tragedy and spurred by this new threat, Hodges decides to reactivate himself to prevent another massacre. Meanwhile, Brady Hartsfield, living with his alcoholic mother, savors the feeling of immense power he commanded behind the wheel of the Mercedes and yearns to experience it again. His next plan, if successful, promises to kill or injure thousands. Only Bill Hodges stands a chance of stopping the killer before he strikes again.
