Synopsis

Razumov, a brilliant but solitary student in St. Petersburg, finds his meticulously planned academic future shattered when fellow student Victor Haldin, an assassin, seeks refuge with him after a political killing. Torn between his ambition for a quiet, honorable career and the perilous implications of harboring a revolutionary, Razumov makes a fateful decision, betraying Haldin to the authorities. This act plunges him into a deep moral abyss, but also earns him the trust of the Russian secret police. He is subsequently dispatched to Geneva, tasked with infiltrating the circle of Russian revolutionary exiles, including Haldin's unsuspecting sister, Natalia, and their mother. As Razumov becomes increasingly enmeshed in a web of deceit, his initial cynicism gives way to a torturous introspection, forcing him to confront the profound ethical complexities of his actions, his identity, and the heavy price of integrity amidst political turmoil and personal guilt.
