Synopsis

Janina Duszejko, an eccentric former engineer, astrologer, and animal rights activist, lives a reclusive life in a remote Polish village near the Czech border. When a series of mysterious deaths plague the local hunting community, Janina develops a radical theory: the animals themselves are exacting revenge for the wrongs committed against them. Dismissed by the local authorities, who attribute the deaths to natural causes or accidents, Janina embarks on her own investigation, guided by her unique philosophical perspective and a deep empathy for the natural world. Blending elements of noir, eco-thriller, and philosophical fable, the novel delves into themes of justice, morality, environmental ethics, and the often-ignored voices of the marginalized. Tokarczuk crafts a compelling and thought-provoking narrative that challenges conventional understanding of crime and punishment, inviting readers to question humanity's place within the natural order.
