Synopsis

Set in the bleak and unforgiving landscape of the Scottish Highlands in 1869, "His Bloody Project" plunges readers into the aftermath of a horrific triple murder. Young Roderick Macrae, a crofter from a remote community, stands accused of the brutal slayings. The narrative unfolds largely through Macrae's own written confession, which, while unequivocally admitting his guilt, also attempts to explain the complex web of circumstances and deeply ingrained grievances that led him to such desperate acts. As his case goes to trial, the legal and psychiatric minds of the era grapple with the crucial question: Was Macrae a cold-blooded killer or a victim of insanity, driven to violence by the oppressive social structures and harsh realities of his world? Shortlisted for the Booker Prize, Graeme Macrae Burnet's novel masterfully blurs the lines between truth and perception, crafting a compelling literary thriller that explores themes of poverty, justice, power, and the provisional nature of reality through the eyes of an unreliable narrator.

Critical Reception

"Shortlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize, this novel has been widely acclaimed as a brilliant and unsettling meditation on truth, sanity, and the human condition, solidifying its place as a powerful work of literary fiction."
