Synopsis

Set in 1985, David Nicholls' 'Starter for Ten' introduces Brian Jackson, an eager working-class student arriving at Bristol University with a singular ambition: to compete on the prestigious TV general knowledge quiz show, 'University Challenge'. His intellectual aspirations soon collide with the confusing world of campus life and romance when he falls head-over-heels for his charismatic, enigmatic teammate, Alice Harbinson. Brian's attempts to win Alice's affection, often clumsy and overly eager, lead him to concoct a 'foolproof plan': excelling on the quiz to prove his worth. The novel masterfully blends coming-of-age anxieties with a nostalgic look at the 1980s, exploring themes of class, self-discovery, and the often-humorous gap between academic knowledge and true wisdom. As Brian navigates academic pressures, social awkwardness, and the pangs of unrequited love, he learns that life's most important lessons extend far beyond general knowledge trivia, leading to poignant and often hilarious consequences.
