Synopsis

In the remote Scottish Highlands, the enigmatic Isserley drives a battered car along isolated roads, preying on unsuspecting male hitchhikers. Beautiful, yet subtly distorted, she lures her victims to a secluded farm, where their fates are far more horrifying and alien than they could ever imagine. As the narrative slowly peels back layers of mystery, the reader is plunged into a chilling, visceral world where humanity itself is viewed through a profoundly unsettling, non-human lens. Faber masterfully crafts a narrative that is part macabre thriller, part philosophical examination of identity, exploitation, and the arbitrary nature of suffering. Isserley's own burgeoning sentience and discomfort with her gruesome task add a complex, tragic dimension to this darkly compelling tale, challenging perceptions of predator and prey, and forcing an uncomfortable confrontation with our own species' capacity for cruelty.
