Synopsis

Haunted by past demons and a self-imposed exile, Detective Harry Hole makes a reluctant return to Oslo. The catalyst for his comeback is the brutal murder of a young junkie, whose case has already been officially closed, with a fellow addict convicted. However, Harry, ever the maverick, senses a deeper, unsettling truth. Despite being denied official clearance to re-open the investigation, he plunges headfirst into the city's dark underbelly, where a veneer of eerie tranquility hides a network of violence, corruption, and mysterious disappearances that the police seem to have overlooked. As Harry relentlessly unearths clues, he finds himself up against a formidable conspiracy of silence, forcing him to confront not only the city's hidden evils but also his own persistent ghosts. 'Phantom' is a relentless descent into a world where justice is elusive and the truth is buried beneath layers of deceit, characteristic of Nesbø's gritty Nordic Noir style.

Critical Reception

"A stark and gripping installment in the iconic Harry Hole series, 'Phantom' is celebrated for its intricate plotting, unflinching exploration of Oslo's dark side, and the continued, harrowing development of its deeply flawed protagonist."
