Synopsis

In Mary Gaitskill's poignant novel, "The Mare," the lives of an unlikely pair intertwine when Velveteen Vargas, an 11-year-old Fresh Air Fund participant from Brooklyn, spends two weeks with an upstate New York couple. Velveteen, a keen and intuitive child from a troubled background, finds herself immersed in the world of Ginger, a failed artist and recovering alcoholic, and Paul, a college professor. Ginger, longing for a child of her own, pours her desperate affection onto Velvet, creating a complex and sometimes overwhelming dynamic. As Velvet navigates this new environment, torn between her hosts and her own tormented mother, her true sanctuary emerges: the stable. She discovers a profound connection with an abused, unruly mare, a bond that mirrors her own search for belonging and control. Gaitskill masterfully explores themes of class, race, and the transformative power of connection, crafting a stirring narrative about how love and family are forged through unexpected encounters and shared vulnerabilities, ultimately revealing the profound impact of empathy and resilience.
