Synopsis

In the opulent setting of the Joseon Dynasty at its cultural peak, a young French diplomat arrives and is captivated by the majestic beauty of Korea. His fascination turns to enchantment upon witnessing Yi Jin, a graceful court dancer, perform the exquisite Dance of the Spring Oriole. Despite Yi Jin's status as a possession of the palace, the diplomat boldly confesses his love to the Emperor, astonishingly gaining permission for her to accompany him back to France. Transported to Belle Époque Paris, Yi Jin embraces a new life of freedom and independence, far from the gilded cage of the Korean court. She dedicates herself to translating and publishing Joseon literature into French alongside another Korean student, bridging two worlds. However, this new world is not without its own profound sorrows. Betrayal, jealousy, and intricate political machinations ultimately lead to the tragic assassination of the last Joseon empress, and the discovery of a poisoned book. Shin Kyung-sook masterfully weaves rich historical detail with luminous characters, bringing a lost era to life in a poignant narrative that resonates long after the final page.
