Synopsis

Per Petterson's "Men in My Situation" offers a poignant and unflinching portrait of Arvid Jansen, a man adrift in the wake of profound personal loss. Still reeling from the tragic ferry accident that claimed his parents and brothers, Arvid's life further fractured when his wife, Turid, divorced him, taking their three daughters. A year later, Arvid navigates his days through a haze of alcohol, ephemeral connections, and aimless drives in his Mazda, unable to escape the suffocating grip of grief and regret. His fragile equilibrium is challenged when Turid unexpectedly calls, forcing a confrontation with the life he's no longer part of. As Arvid grapples with his 'dark night of the soul,' a lifeline emerges: his daughter Vigdis, who he's always felt understood him best, reaches out amidst her own crisis. This tender, yet merciless, narrative explores the possibility of redemption and connection for a man struggling to find his footing, even as he's called upon to be a source of strength for someone who still needs him, mirroring the emotional depth of Petterson's acclaimed works.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its profound emotional depth and unflinching character study, the novel is widely considered a masterful work, standing as the equal of Petterson’s international bestseller, "Out Stealing Horses.""
