Synopsis

In the eccentric and unsettling town of Tiptoe Floorboard, the Doe clan rules with a complex mix of criminality and victimhood. Patriarch John Doe's control, however, shows signs of faltering. The catalyst for a potential shift arrives when Jetty Doe, a key member of this enigmatic family, orchestrates a daring break-in at a gun store, making off with a Kalashnikov. As Jetty journeys across town in a taxi, a singularly elusive and chatty narrator takes the reader on a wild, digressive exploration into the lives of various Doe family members. The narrative zooms in and out, unraveling the intricate causes and far-reaching repercussions of Jetty's audacious act. Anna Burns, with the distinctive voice that would later garner global acclaim for "Milkman," showcases her characteristic linguistic flair, sharp wit, and profound insights into human nature and the deep-seated roots of violence. "Little Constructions" is a darkly comedic and serpentine novel that unflinchingly examines the long-lasting shadows of abuse and violent crime, exploring what happens when long-hidden, unspeakable truths can no longer be ignored.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its linguistic brilliance and fearless exploration of dark themes, "Little Constructions" solidified Anna Burns's distinctive voice, paving the way for her Man Booker Prize-winning success."
